Here is an email from Shira Goodman, Executive Director of CeaseFirePA, on Dec. 2nd:
Senator Toomey just called our office. He wanted to let us know that he and Senator Manchin plan to re-introduce the Manchin-Toomey background check expansion bill.
This afternoon, when the US Senate tackles some budget business, it is likely several gun policy amendments will come up. The Manchin-Toomey background check expansion bill will be one of those amendments.
We need to thank Senator Toomey for standing firm in his support for this important measure that will keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them. And we must also ask him to support commonsense policies like closing the Terror Gap that allows folks on the do not fly list to buy guns.
Executive Director, CeaseFirePA
We need to add: While it is true that Senator Toomey is one of the few Republican legislators willing to back a bill expanding background checks, the famous Manchin-Toomey bill from 2013, the bill is not comprehensive. It is a weak tea compromise bill. In addition, as pointed out by his rival for office this year, Admiral Joe Sestak, here are negative positions on guns that he has taken:
Pat Toomey Gun Violence Facts
Voted to allow individuals on the terrorist watch list to buy guns;
Voted to continue exempting pawn shops from running background checks;
Voted against an amendment to assist law enforcement fight gun crimes by penalizing “straw purchasers” who buy guns for persons prohibited from obtaining them;
Voted against an amendment that would have banned the sale of dozens of military-style assault weapons from public purchase;
Voted to restrict the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms from requiring gun dealers to conduct physical inventories of weapons;
Voted against requiring unlicensed dealers at gun shows to conduct background checks;
Has repeatedly said “my idea of gun control is a steady aim”;

While I agree with Shira Goodman that Pat Toomey deserves our thanks for voting for expanding background checks yesterday, it is obvious that to make real change, we need a new Senator in PA who will be a great advocate for our issue. That man is Joe Sestak.
